Network Version Installation
See also, Platinum Edition Network Install

We recommend installing the network version of Derek on one computer (the server).   You may then share the program installation directory for the clients to use.   Various program changes such as buying new modules, new reports, and yearly tax changes will be easier to apply if you only have to install them one time on one computer.   The following steps will guide you through installing the network version of Derek.
Server-Side Installation
  1. Install Derek on the server.   (C:\Derek)
  2. Make C:\Derek sharable
  3. Open Derek and create a data directory For this example, we will create a data directory in c:\MyDerekData
  4. Make c:\MyDerekData sharable.   If server is running WindowsXP, also check "Allow network users to change my files"
Client-Side Installation
  1. Go to "Network Places", click "Computers Near Me" and find the server.   Double-click the server to see its network shares
  2. Highlight "Derek" and click "Map Network Drive..." from the file menu item.
  3. Choose a drive letter that is available and check the box "Reconnect at logon."   For this example, we will use "F:"
  4. Click "Finish" and another explorer window will pop up with this new drive letter.   This is your program directory, and you may close this new window.
  5. Once you are back to the server's network shares, highlight "data2005" or whatever you named the data directory on the server.
  6. Click "Map Network Drive..." from the file menu item.
  7. Choose a drive letter that is available and check the box "Reconnect at logon."   For this example, we will use "G:"

  10. Using Windows Explorer, Go to the Roughneck Program Directory (F:).
  11. Copy Derekv.exe
  12. Right-Click on your desktop and choose "Paste Shortcut"
  13. Double-Click this new shortcut on your desktop to open Derek.
  14. Up at the top of the screen, you will notice that it displays what data directory you are working in, by default it is "F:\Derek\DeData\" This is the sample data so you will need to switch to your live data directory.   Click on "Utilities" -> "Data Directory Change"
  15. Double click the G:\ drive and click ok.   Click ok again when it lists the companies in this data directory.   If you go to the "Help" -> "About" screen, you should see: "Program Directory: F:\" " Data Directory: G:\" If you see this, pat yourself on the back! Just repeat these steps for each client computer that will be using Derek.
Roughneck Derek Network Specifications

This version allows for unlimited number of users at anytime. A dedicated "server" is not required, just a main computer to host the program directory and data directory, but a server computer is acceptable too. Here are the specs recommended or required:
  1. Windows 7/Windows 8/Windows 10
  2. At least 512 MB of RAM
  3. 100 MB of free Disk Space for program installation. Plus additional space for your data.
  4. Wired Ethernet running at full duplex 100mbps or higher.
(WIFI WILL FAIL and is GUARANTEED to corrupt data).
  5. A persistent reliable network that does not drop connections or have random resets. Worst offenders are Gigabit Ethernet cards by Intel offered in various Dell computers.
  6. Don't use antivirus/security suites like Norton which wedges its own driver in the network stack that royally confuse the data. ESET NOD32 is highly recommended. There is a reason the US GOV and US MILITARY use products by ESET.
  7. Server must NOT sleep or go into stand-by during hours that network data is going to be in use or worked on.

  8. We recommend installing the network version of Derek on one computer (main computer or server). You may then share the program installation directory and data directory for the clients to use. Various program changes and patches such as buying new modules, new reports, and yearly tax changes will be easier to apply if you only have to install them one time on one computer.
